CDA Subject Area 3: Supporting Children’s Social and Emotional Development

This 10-hour training course aims to empower childcare providers with essential knowledge and skills to support the social and emotional development of young children. Participants will explore the stages of emotional growth, understand the significance of social-emotional skills for readiness in kindergarten, and learn strategies to encourage self-regulation, consistent caregiving, and a culturally responsive atmosphere. The curriculum will also address effective guidance methods, positive interactions, and the impact of self-esteem on early childhood education. By completing this training, childcare providers will be better prepared to cultivate nurturing environments that enhance children's overall well-being.

B. Objectives / Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this training, the learner will be able to:
  1. Identify strategies for integrating culture and diversity into an infant and toddler program
  2. Identify the four supportive social learning components.
  3. Define classroom community.
  4. Identify the misconception that classroom curriculum is more important than social relationships.
  5. Explain the consequences for children experiencing negative interactions and vocal tones in the classroom.
  6. Identify common interaction strategies to help promote a positive classroom environment for young children.
  7. Describe new methods to increase the positive emotional climate within a childcare program.
  8. Give examples of positive guidance in the early childhood classroom.
  9. Demonstrate understanding of the importance of predictable and consistent care.
  10. Describe the impact of culture on infant and toddler development
  11. Identify ways to examine child behavior to prepare for guidance.
  12. Describe the importance of social emotional skill development in children entering kindergarten.
  13. Illustrate ways to apply the essentials of using supportive social learning to handle behavior issues.
  14. Describe the stages of emotional development in young children.
  15. Demonstrate an understanding of how to foster self-regulation skills in children.
  16. Define self-esteem and identify how it relates to art.
  17. Demonstrate an understanding of how positive guidance promotes sound social and emotional development.
  18. Demonstrate understanding of positive alternatives of timeouts and certain disciplining techniques based on best practices.
  19. Define social emotional development in young children
Criteria to earn CEUs:
Certificates are awarded when the following criteria have been met by the learner:
  1. Class has been paid in full
  2. All material has been reviewed
  3. All review questions and final test have been completed with a passing score of 80% or higher.
Learning Assessment Method:
Learners will be assessed through questions after every section is completed. Learners will not be allowed to proceed to the next section of the training until all questions have been answered correctly. Learners will be presented with a final test composed of true/false and multiple choice questions. Upon successful completion of the training, learners will receive their certificate by email.

Learning Methodology:
Online material will be presented in the form of slides, accompanied with speech. Videos will be used to demonstrate ideas and concepts. Charts and tables will be used for illustration.

Logistics/Required Technology:
A stable internet connection is required for the completion of this course. Users are highly encouraged to take their online course on Google Chrome on either a laptop or desktop computer. Speakers and/or headphones are also required to hear speech.
